What is a Birth Chart (Natal Chart)?
A birth chart — also known as a natal chart, astrology chart, or horoscope chart — is a map of the sky at the exact moment of your birth. It shows where each planet was positioned against the background of the 12 zodiac signs.
The circular structure
A birth chart is drawn as a circle divided into 12 segments called houses. The zodiac signs form the outer ring, and the 12 houses occupy the inner area. The Ascendant (rising sign) sits at the 9 o'clock position on the left, marking the start of the 1st house. Planets are placed inside the circle at the angular position corresponding to their longitude in the sky at birth.
A snapshot of the sky
The birth chart is essentially a photograph of the solar system from the Earth's perspective at a specific moment in time. Because the Earth rotates, the rising sign changes every two hours, and planetary house positions shift continuously. This is why birth time matters — even 15 minutes difference can change which house a planet occupies.
Western vs Vedic birth charts
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on the seasons) and typically produces a wheel-shaped chart. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (based on star positions) and uses a square grid format (Kundali). Both contain the same planetary positions but measured against different reference points, causing a difference of approximately 23 degrees called the Ayanamsa. This tool uses an educational approximation for visual reference.
The 12 Houses in the Birth Chart
The 12 houses in a birth chart each represent a different domain of life. Planets placed in a house bring their energy to that domain.
Houses 1–4 (Personal foundations)
The 1st house governs self, appearance, and personality. The 2nd house relates to personal wealth, possessions, and values. The 3rd house covers communication, short travel, and siblings. The 4th house represents home, roots, family, and emotional foundations. These four houses form the personal base of the chart.
Houses 5–8 (Creative and transformative)
The 5th house covers creativity, romance, children, and self-expression. The 6th house deals with health, daily work, and service. The 7th house governs partnerships, marriage, and open relationships. The 8th house represents transformation, shared resources, and hidden depths. Together they cover creative expression and significant life changes.
Houses 9–12 (Social and spiritual)
The 9th house covers higher education, philosophy, long travel, and belief systems. The 10th house (Midheaven) governs career, public reputation, and authority. The 11th house relates to friendships, social networks, and long-term goals. The 12th house covers hidden matters, retreat, and spiritual liberation. These houses connect the individual to the broader world and inner depth.
The 7 Planets Shown in This Birth Chart
The chart displays the seven traditional celestial bodies used in classical astrology. Each planet governs specific themes and areas of life.
Sun and Moon
The Sun represents the core self, ego, vitality, and life purpose. It stays in each zodiac sign for about 30 days and gives us the familiar "star sign." The Moon governs emotions, instincts, the subconscious mind, and patterns of habit. It changes signs approximately every 2.5 days, making it the fastest-moving body in the chart.
Mercury and Venus
Mercury rules communication, thinking, short travel, and learning. It is always within 28 degrees of the Sun. Venus governs love, beauty, values, art, and pleasure. Both are inner planets that stay relatively close to the Sun in the chart, so they are found in the same sign as the Sun or one to two signs away.
Mars
Mars represents action, drive, energy, and ambition. It is the first outer planet and spends approximately six weeks in each zodiac sign. In the birth chart, Mars shows where and how a person takes initiative, asserts themselves, and directs physical energy. Mars is also associated with the Ascendant in many chart readings for its influence on physical appearance and temperament.
Jupiter
Jupiter governs expansion, wisdom, abundance, and spiritual growth. It spends approximately one year in each zodiac sign and is considered one of the most beneficial planets in traditional astrology. Its house placement in the birth chart shows where a person experiences growth, luck, and philosophical development throughout life.
Saturn
Saturn represents discipline, responsibility, limitation, and long-term structure. It spends approximately two and a half years in each sign and returns to its birth position around age 29 — an event astrologers call the "Saturn return," associated with a major life maturation point. Saturn's placement shows where a person faces challenges that ultimately build strength and mastery.
How to Read Your Birth Chart
Reading a birth chart is a multi-layered skill developed over time. Here is a beginner-friendly approach to start making sense of the visual output.
Start with the Ascendant
The Ascendant (the sign on the left edge of the chart, at the 9 o'clock position) is your entry point. It shows the zodiac sign rising at birth and defines the start of the 1st house. The Ascendant shapes how others perceive you and how you approach the world. All other houses follow counterclockwise from this point.
Locate the Sun and Moon
Find the Sun symbol (a circle with a dot) and the Moon symbol (a crescent) in the chart. The house they occupy shows where their themes are most active in your life. The Sun's sign is your traditional "star sign." The Moon's sign shows your emotional style and inner life.
Note which houses have planets
Houses with multiple planets are areas where a lot of life energy is concentrated. Empty houses are not unimportant — they are just governed by the sign on their cusp and the planet ruling that sign. Most people have planets clustered in a few houses and empty ones elsewhere.
Look for planet markers on the wheel
In this chart, each planet is shown as a labeled circle on the outer ring. Hover over a planet marker to see its full name. The position on the ring indicates the approximate degree of the zodiac the planet occupies. Planets near the boundaries between houses can be in either house depending on the exact degree.
Birth Chart vs Kundali — Key Differences
Both describe the same sky at the moment of birth, but they use different visual formats and different zodiac reference systems.
Visual format
A Western birth chart (natal chart) uses a circular wheel with houses arranged counterclockwise and the Ascendant on the left. A North Indian Kundali uses a diamond-shaped grid with fixed house positions. A South Indian Kundali uses a square grid with fixed sign positions. This tool renders a circular chart similar to the Western format for visual clarity.
Zodiac system
Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts at 0 degrees Aries at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, adjusted by the Ayanamsa (currently approximately 23 degrees). This means a person whose Sun is at 10 degrees Aries in Western astrology would have their Sun at approximately 17 degrees Pisces in Vedic astrology.
Which to use
Use the birth chart for Western-style readings focused on psychological themes and personal development. Use the Kundali Calculator for Vedic astrology readings focused on Moon Sign, Ascendant in the sidereal system, Dasha timing, and traditional Indian astrology practices. Both start from the same birth date and time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Birth Charts
Answers to common questions about natal charts, how they work, and what the results mean.
How do I generate my birth chart?
Enter your date of birth and birth time in the form above, then click Render Chart. The tool generates a circular SVG birth chart with 12 houses and approximate planetary positions based on your birth date and time.
What if I don't know my birth time?
The chart will still render with approximate planetary positions for the day. However, the Ascendant (rising sign) and house placements will be less accurate since the Ascendant changes every two hours. If birth time is unknown, many astrologers use noon as a default and note that the house positions are uncertain.
Is this a full professional astrology chart?
No. This tool provides an educational and visual approximation of your natal chart designed for exploration and learning. For a full professional reading with precise ephemeris data, exact house cusps, and detailed interpretation, consult a qualified Vedic or Western astrologer.
How many houses does a birth chart have?
A birth chart has 12 houses, each covering 30 degrees of arc. They are numbered 1 through 12 counterclockwise from the Ascendant. This chart shows all 12 houses clearly in the radial SVG layout with house numbers labeled around the inner ring.
What is the difference between a birth chart and a transit chart?
A birth chart (natal chart) shows the planetary positions at the moment of birth and remains fixed as your personal map throughout life. A transit chart shows the current positions of planets overlaid on the birth chart, used to understand how current planetary movements affect your natal placements at any given time.
Can I see my Sun sign, Moon sign, and rising sign in this chart?
Yes. The Sun's position indicates your Sun Sign (Western star sign), the Moon's position shows your Moon Sign, and the Ascendant position at the start of the 1st house shows your rising sign. All three are visible in the chart visualization.
